I lost my job earlier this year in IL. I had earned a high salary. I have been searching for suitable work for some time now with no luck. Recently, an opportunity came up to take a part time job. It was in retail and paid $9 per hour. I called unemployment (in IL) to inquire if I could accept it and still collect benefits at all (supplement my income slightly), and how benefits would work. They said yes, and advised the earning limits and partial benefit collection if I earned above that. they said it was perfectly acceptable.

Fast forward a few weeks later. The part time employer began scheduling me for full time hours AND daytime hours. I explained to the employer that I was only interested in working PT for them, and I thought I had signed on to work evenings and weekends. They did not want to adjust my hours back so I resigned. I reported my earnings to unemployment.

Now, a question has been raised regarding my eligibility since I voluntarily left the part time job. I have to call unemployment tomorrow, but I am worried now I will lose my benefits altogether. This job at $9 per hour was in no way going to be my new career. The job I had lost paid six figures so obviously this was not suitable full time employment for me. Additionally, I was being scheduled daytime hours which impeded my ability to go on interviews and speak with potential employers for more suitable jobs. ( I was told when I took the PT job it was for weekends and evenings).

Can they/will they deny my benefits now? Any advice on what to do? Thanks.
