| My son just graduated from high school with a 2.0 GPA. He's took a few months off to try to figure out what to do with his life. He claims that he wants to do something in the business field but doesn't know where to start. I told him to get an associates degree at the community college. He says he's afraid that this won't get him anywhere. He's ambitious but just doesn't do well in school. What do you think I should suggest to him to do? |

| I believe if he gets the degrees that he needs in the field it doesn't matter if he is a good student or not.And another important thing is the networking you have in the bussiness field. If you do have a strong network you can help him a lot to find a small job in the field at the begging then after he gets those degrees he can start look for a better job having some experience in the field too. |

Well, you could try and help him defining what he would like to do in the business field.
Which business, for instance. Which position: employee? manager? entrepreneur? and so on.
Then, you can talk about that with your friend and maybe you will find out that they need someone like your son! This is the thing Ciprian called "networking" and you could also use your friends and acquaintances to help your son focusing about his future. Perhaps among your friends there are any in the business your son would like?
You could also tell him about CvTips.com and this forum.
Don't worry - and don't let him worry - about not being good at school. We are good at the things we like and are interested in: but in most cases, the school is not among them!
Let us know.

It is obvious that the kid is scared in a way. I say you should MAKE him try doing some thing.....without setting pressure on him....I think that actually trying to do things will help him have a picture on what he would really want to do. I agree to Ciprian when saying he doesn't need to be brilliant to get a degree...and it is quite good to have one in the field...But he can do something in paraller, maybe until he gets it, he would have made his mind regarding his future job.
Bottomline, be supportive and induce him sone self confidence. |
