I have a job that gives me a lot of free time in between customers. I'm studying to be a writer. Is it wrong for me to use my time while on the clock to pursue my dreams? Especially when we are not busy.

Sometimes I fell it's alright and other times I fill guilty. I fell I'm wasting time just doing nothing when all my work is caught up and no customers. Anything feedback is welcomed. Thanks MG

MG I guess it really depends on the boss you have. If you get along with your boss maybe you could talk to them and get permission to study when your not busy. I have never had to deal with this so I'm not sure what to tell you.

But it couldn't hurt to talk things over. If they agree you won't have to feel guilty anymore. I have always gotten along pretty much with whoever I was working with so I hope you have a good boss like I have had. MJSFCS

If you can do it discreetly, and remain ready to serve the customers, then I would say go for it. What I mean by discreetly is, don't have your work out on the counter, and then quickly stuff it somewhere when a customer comes in. Customers see these kind of things, and interpret them as you having no skill in your job, as you are doing other work. If you can do it somewhere like a desk, or table near your post, then it will be discreet, and will serve everyone better. You may want to run in front of your boss, just so it isnt't a surprise, but I doubt it would be a problem if you truly do have that much free time...

Certainly run it by your boss, as he or she may have some additional work for you to do, before you can do your studying. This way your boss should appreciate your honesty & you won't feel guilty.

If you tell this to your boss than he will probably give you some more work.

If I would be you I would just do it in the spare time without telling anything to my boss.

But of course is up to you.

I think StefanJechel may have a point. Smile
But right now what exactly are you doing when there are no customers around?
And is your boss always there? Do you work with other colleagues?
Because if you are alone I see no reason not to take advantage of the break.
