Hi this is my first post here. I've got myself into a bad spot. About three weeks ago I left a fairly decent job with a City government to accept a job with a State agency. The job has turned out to be unbearable to me. Unfortunately I signed a two-year commitment as a condition of accepting the position with the State. I still have a chance to return to my old job and can't imagine staying at the State for two-years. My question is how do I get out of this two-year commitment? It didn't seem to contain any "legally binding" type language on it. Any advice? I'm really stressing out over this. Thanks.

Absent that true "legally binding" stuff (as in "if you leave we get your first born child and you have run naked down Main Street"), you just go back to your previous employer. If the "state" runs into financial trouble, for example, they won't hesitate to "terminate" your contract, now would they/it?

If you feel that uneasy about quitting the job, reread the contract one more time, and then maybe have someone else look at it too [I am thinking as in a lawyer or such].

I think an agreement would be a contract saying that they are willing to employ you under those specific terms for two years, then at that time review, revise, and renew a contract with you. Not that you must definitely spend the next two years of your life working there. But I could be wrong.
