Have you ever been late for an interview. I did; my best excuse was to be honest and tell the trruth. Sometilmes it does work and lies generally et you to tell more lies, which is never a good start for an employer.
I did attribute me being late to transport traffic or generally having a problem finding the place.....
being late is always bad .... post your late for the interview experience in this thread . |

It's always a good idea to leave at least half and hour longer than you imagine you'll need when travelling to an interview. Most people do this when they're travelling to an airport and in all honestly, a job interview, unless you're travelling to the airport on business, is probably far more important.
I know the unexpected can happen and that even the best laid plans can be shot to pieces, in which case you did the right thing by being honest. As you say, one lie leads to another and before you know it, you're tangled in a web of lies with an employer before you've even got the job!
Another good reason for leaving early is that once you've located the offices, you can find a cafe or similar and sit for a while with a coffee while you relax before the interview. Arriving in a stressed and hurried state is never the best way to start an interview, after all.

| I always try to get the phone number of the people doing the interview or your agency before attending the interview, so that if you are stuck in traffic you can ring them and let them know you will be late rather than them sitting around waiting for you. |

That's really good advice, Neiler.
What Gustav said about lies is very true. They tend to breed - tell one and before you know it you've weaved and entire web that you can so easily become entangled in. It's better to have lost the job through honesty than to start on a lie.

As the others have said the best solution is to simply not be late. You would be surprised to see how much employers put into your being punctual to the interview. You have to show they that you are accountable, and aren't going to be strolling into work late everyday if they were to hire you. I would recommend getting there at least 15 minutes earlier, so this may mean that you have to leave 45 minutes-1 hour earlier, but it is all worth it if you get the job. If you still find yourself running late, even trying to arrive early, I would suggest just being honest with your potential employer. They understand things happen, but make sure you have a good excuse, and if you have their phone number remember to phone ahead to inform them you are running late.

I have actually driven to the place of the interview the day before the actual meeting was to take place, just to ensure I knew where I was going and how long it would take to get there.
Being late is almost impossible to overcome, no matter how many times you apologize.

Ya your right, because they are basically hiring you on their first impressions of you. If you are late, that sets an awful first impression, and as C. Vaughan said, your chances of getting the job are as close to zero as they can get. Driving there is a good hint, especially if your not familiar with the area, or if you know there is construction in the area, and detours to go around. Being early for an interview is never a problem with a boss, and often times a positive for your interview, but it is however a fatal problem when you are late, in terms of your chances of getting the job.
