I'm guessing my spouse and I will be moving out of state in the near future. We plan to move to where we have family at, but we have no idea what to expect. "Marquita, I don't know" is all I hear. I'm not really worried, but what should I expect while looking? Will most prospective companies pay for transportation for an interview? Will there be a phone interview? It won't take much and I'll be out all my sick time with interviews.

Sorry to say, you'll be paying for it, unless you're working for an unusually helpful prospective employer. Interviews vary, a lot, these days, depending on where you go for jobs. In highly competitive interviews, you may well get a phone interview, which is a filtering process. Treat it like a normal interview.

This move can be made a bit easier if you start scouting around that area now, online, so you can get a picture of what's available. You can also do some cold canvassing, checking things out with the places you'd like to work. That can save you a lot of time, and you can get information, express interest in employers, and do some seeding of the ground down the track with them when they have vacancies.

The more you can do for yourself, before the move, the better. Anything you can think of that will set you up in advance has to help. Moving is always likely to create a further obstacle course, so if you can get this stuff into working order ASAP, you won't have to start from scratch when you get there.

I'd have to agree completely with Pauloz. Preparing now is gonna be the difference between getting that interview or not. You can't afford to be wasting time once you move so my advice is start scouting out agencies now. Phone interviews are quite rare as people usually prefer to see who they're talking to. If you still have questions I'd be more then happy to send you a free, informational article '10 Sins of Interviewing' it may help you answer some questions.

Best of luck with your new job and home.
