Do you think that salary negotiation is really worth it? I mean if you get an offer from a company that you really like do you think that you should engage in salary negotiation or just take the job position because you really like that company? What do you take into consideration when you need to make this type of decision when there is only a few dollars difference but more hours? I mean simply working more hours should make up for the difference in pay. I'm wondering if you'd bother with salary negotiations or just let it go? I'm really confused as to what I should do in a situation like this. Thanks!

Sometimes it is worth it. To me, it doesn't matter if I like the comany. If the salary and other facilities (health insurance, tax deductions possibilities) are not satisfactory, I would not engage in taking a job in there. Maybe a part time one or one which is temporary (meaning I'm really desperate). Still, I live in a country where if you are not sure about your job, you're not sure about anything in your life, so my opinion could be a little bit drastic.

I usually go in a guideline of asking for at least 10% more based on current pay. But if i really like the position and the company, I'm willing to accept a match if they can't meet at least 10%.

There's a trick to this based on my experience. Not sure if it'll work for you though.

Say my monthly pay is $3k. If there's AWS (13th month fixed bonus). I'll tell them that my monthly is $3k x 13 / 12 = $3250. And i'll ask for at least 10% more over 13. And if i have other allowances such as transport, flexi cash..etc, i'll spread it over 12 and that'll make my monthly figure look more.

Then again, if my company doesn't have AWS and I'm gettin $3k. I'll still tell the company the same story and that I do have a AWS, which still works out to be $3250. And if the company you are applying for is willing to pay you 10% more of what you are getting over 13mth, then effectively, you have $3872.91. Which works out to be $3872-$3000 =~ 30% increment.

Generally asking for a 10% increment isn't asking alot. If the company is stingy, or tight on budget, but willing to match your current drawn, then you're still getting an increment if you tell your story right Wink

That's kinda how I got a 56% pay rise with only 3 years of experience.
Not sure if that's a lot from where you guys are coming from, but in Singapore, with only 3 years of experience, its a pretty decent figure.

Yes salary negotiation is certainly worth it.

Salary negotiations are very common & the employer expects that the successful applicant to ask for more & to negotiate. Also, by not asking for more & not negotiating, the employer may get the impression that you are desperate & that you would accept anything.

Obviously if you ask for more & thay say thay won't go any higher you still have the choice of accepting their original offer.

To get an idea, have a look at this example http://www.kmd-solutions.com/salary_negotiation_example.htm
