I'm on the bottom rung of a career in the health care field...a spot I've occupied for the past 16 years. It pays very well considering how much I have to actually work (about $65K), but I've always longed for an administrative position. I recently finished my undergraduate degree in health care management, and this has opened some doors for me.

Here's the problem: I'm being offered a management job with a company in another state, but the most they are willing to pay me, at least initially, is about $8K less than what I make now. On the surface, should be an easy decision. The first thing I thought (but fortunately did not say) was "hell no!" They've given me some time to think about it. My pride was the first thing, and then I thought about the practicality of it. How much sense would it make to take a job with a lot more responsibility with a lot less pay? The more I thought about it, however, the more I'm not so sure. I have no administrative experience...just a degree, so they're taking a chance on me. Second, if I could suck up the pay cut for a year or two...I could use the position and experience to move in to a better administrative position with a bigger company that paid more.

I'm just not sure what to do. The job and location are perfect. I just don't know if I can handle that big of a pay cut. All I'm thinking about right now is what I could get rid of to make up for that lost $8K.

Thoughts?

In my experience? None.

It logically makes sense to take a cut in pay if you are being given an opportunity such as you described [they are taking a chance on you] and there is room for change in your pay and further advancement later, so that the pay cut is not a permanent loss. You should at least look at it as a side step, not a step back. If it is a true step back, then don't do it.
