Dear Joan May,

Your ad in The Daily News recently caught my interest. I would appreciate it if you would take the time to read through my employment package to see what makes me the right person for the job.

Throughout my seven years of teaching, I have worked in many different settings. I held a job as an English Literature teacher in Philadelphia for four years, and prior to that I worked as a English Composition teacher in Chicago, Illinois. Both of these schools were located in a section of town where the dropout rate was alarmingly high and the students had to be searched before entering the school. I am proud to say that through a lot of hard work and extra time spent tailoring to the students' specific situations, only two of my students have dropped out.

While pursing my teaching degree at Pennsylvania State University, I complete my student teaching requirements at a nearby school.

I noticed that your school is also suffering from a high dropout rate, 65% to be exact. I know your ad mentioned that you need teachers who can get the students interested in school again. If you’ll let me, I would like to try to make that percentage much smaller. With the help of the other teachers, the parents, and of course, the school administrators, there is no reason why we can't get these kids excited about learning again.

Please consider what I have offered in this letter. I hope that you will let me try my methods on these students, and together we can change their lives.
