If You've worked in the shipping industry all your life, the people that probably know you best are ship captains and other members of the officer team. However, these people make lousy references because they usually aren't easily contacted by phone (at least not quickly). Instead, find references that work on land or provide letters of recommendation and very detailed ways and times when people can be reached.

If you want to organize an exploration trip you must have a very good project and make a very tantalizing presentation of it. You can even find an employment as a member of one expedition, but you must have a very deep knowledge of the ocean and maritime skills as obvious pre-requisite. Depending on the job you are applying for as expedition member, qualification can be required, and you must be prepared to face very long and specific interviews. On the other hand the wages are generally the better one can find in the maritime job field.
