I Want to Work in Professional Baseball

By Michael Rosenthal

There are countless careers out there, but if you're a baseball lover like me, the thought of being able to work in professional baseball becomes intriguing, if not altogether tantalizing. In fact, several endeavors in the baseball industry actually put you in the stadium of choice where you might get to enjoy moments of the games as they are being played. Having been around the game now for over four decades, I can honestly say that ,writing articles about baseball (along with the other major sports), has become my passion over the past several years.

But that may not be the avenue of endeavor for you. What works for one person may not work for another. Every individual is unique, every dream is different, and not everyone is cut out for this. I will tell you right up front that it will take a lot of patience, due diligence, and possibly pursuing additional education. Did I just throw a negative in there? You bet I did. It may be an unfortunate thing for some, but there may come a time when you have to ask yourself do I really want to work in professional baseball? Never forget though that it is never too late to .

Think about this as an example. How many great ballplayers have retired from the game, decided to manage a team, and then been less than great at it? It happens a lot. I'm merely giving you that caution that being employed in some aspect of professional baseball may not be the right fit for you when it comes to having a career. On the other side of the coin, if you're passionate about it, you?ll always have regrets if you don't at least try to pursue those dreams.

Though this first bit of content is fairly generic, the intent here is to give you an idea of all the avenues in pro ball where you can pursue a career. Over the course of these articles, I'm going to attempt to help you gain some direction and insight as to what you?ll be facing if you want to work in professional baseball. This will at least provoke some thought on your behalf as to what you think you might be successful at besides being a ballplayer. Don't get me wrong, playing professional baseball is no doubt an adrenaline rush. But what are you going to do when your time in the game has come to pass (more food for thought if you're playing ball currently)?

What I've done is break down baseball careers into ten avenues of endeavor. Hopefully, this will get you thinking in a career direction. As mentioned above, I will cover them in the order they are listed in ensuing articles. The career areas are followed by the tentative name of the article that relates. They are as follows:

  • Administration/Management ? From Team Manager to General Manager
  • Broadcasting and Journalism ? Columnist or Analyst?
  • Online and Offline Courses That Can Help You - Educational Avenues for Pro Baseball Careers
  • Groundskeeping Careers ? Getting Your Hands Dirty
  • Job Posting Sites ? Where Do I Find the Job I'm Looking For?
  • Officiating ? Making the Right Call
  • Sales and Marketing ? Persuasion and Promotion
  • Scouting ? Finding That Diamond in the Rough
  • Sports Medicine ? Is There a Doctor in the House?
  • Various Stadium Positions ? Peanuts, Popcorn, Programs, etc.
    • This should stimulate your brain a little bit if you truly want to work in professional baseball. And the list may not stop here. Once the initial series is complete, there is always that possibility that new content may become available. So sit back and enjoy the information. Just remember to keep your hands and feet inside the ride at all times.
