Direct questions

Direct questions, like Why should we hire you are designed to test your confidence and often separate the weak from the strong in making a contrast between interviewees.

Other questions are equally unsettling for candidates:

These questions aren't purely to annoy candidates, although some of them, after a long, demanding interview, aren't appreciated. Sometimes they're a stress factor, to check your ability to handle an additional pressure.

In some cases they are actual questions. If the candidate is overqualified, or the choice of position doesn't make much sense relative to qualifications and training, they can be quite relevant.

The level of complexity in the question relates to the job. In highly competitive industries, like sales, the question may be extremely blunt:

You're a salesman. Now sell me on why you're a better salesman than anyone else we could get.

What do you dislike about this kind of work?

Some people refer to these questions as Good Reasons Not To Hire People. That's a bit of an overstatement in any system where only one person will get the job anyway, but cynicism has a way of making its point.

The direct approach might look like it's asking for an evasive response, but quite often it gets a direct response.

That can be a mistake.

You can, with a little effort, provide some very negative information, unintentionally. It's quite avoidable, and you do have a choice.

Remember:

  • Irritating as direct questions can be, and stupid as some of them can sound, they are interview questions.
  • Don't lose your temper, however justified.
  • Resist any urge for sarcasm, however justified.

To start with, you only have to give the response you feel appropriate. There are a few options available for you. All you really have to do is provide a reasonable response to the questions.
