Salary negotiation involves the careful dance between a job candidate and a potential employer about the base pay a worker will start a job at. In most cases, salary negotiations do not begin until a preliminary job offer has been made. It is possible, however, for initial salary negotiation to occur in the middle of an initial interview. In either case, job candidates should be prepared to discuss their past earnings, their desired salary for the new position and to undergo a bit of give and take on the actual numbers.
