Should my salary negotiation counter offer be higher than what I want?

When making a salary negotiation counter offer, it may be a good idea to request more than you actually want. By doing this, you leave yourself some room for negotiation if the employer comes back with another offer. If they take your counter offer, you will end up with the an even bigger salary than you anticipated. If they do not take the counter offer, you will still be able to come back down a bit and not end up hurting yourself financially. If you are unsure of your ability to secure the job, you may not want to go too much higher, though.
