What is a typical day at work like in a surgical nurse job?

The typical day for a surgical nurse job includes many of the same components as a day for any other registered nurse but with a focus on supporting surgical treatments and procedures. Most surgical nurses start their days very early in the morning, prepping patients for surgery in outpatient and inpatient medical settings. This includes obtaining vital signs and inserting intravenous tubes, catheters and other medical devices that help keep patients healthy during surgical procedures. Surgical nurses attend surgical procedures and assist physicians and anestheticians during this time, and they provide aftercare to patients once surgery is completed. Many surgical nurses work up to 18 hours a day, five days a week, and much of this work is very physically and emotionally demanding.
