What is required to become a certified surgical tech?
Requirements may vary to become a certified surgical tech; however, in most cases, this is accomplished by taking coursework offered by a regionally accredited school that offers a surgical tech certification program. The length of the program may range from 9 to 24 months, depending on the type of surgical tech specialty desired. Because most employers prefer to hire certified surgical techs, surgical tech hopefuls may select a Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education (CAAHE) accredited program that offers education in patient care, proper handling of medical equipment, and surgical procedures. Once the coursework is completed, surgical tech students must pass a lengthy national certification exam. Then must then complete an additional 60 hours of continuing education credits and retake the exam every 4 years to keep the certification active.
