Salary Increase Through Car Sales Promotion
I had two things going for me as a car salesman. I knew my cars, and understood my customers. My other asset was being pretty stubborn. I wouldn’t cut corners on quality, wouldn’t consider trade ins on major repair jobs, and knew the laws. The owner of the business agreed with me after a couple of incidents with some very dodgy vehicles, one of which was stolen, where I probably saved him a fortune. I refused to trade, although both customers went straight to the owner.
He told my manager to do things my way, unless he wanted to pay the overheads and legals himself. The manager didn’t like it, and we weren’t on very good terms, but there wasn’t much he could do about it. The manager soon left, and his job was up for grabs. Unlike the other salesmen, I went into the interview and said basically, “This is how I do things”. Apparently the others all just quoted their sales figures. Didn’t do them a lot of good, because mine were better, and I didn’t need to quote them.
I found out later that I had some assistance getting that promotion. Our commercial customers, mainly businesses who bought company cars, had been making a point of dealing with me, because they trusted me. The owner had noticed I was doing all their sales, and had contacted them.
