Job Description:
I get overlooked a lot because I am by far the youngest one in my work environment. I used to kind of pout and sulk about the fact that the never gave me anything to do, and then one day I just confronted the boss. I said 'I can handle more than this. Give me something to do.' And instead of being shrugged off or put in my place, I got a funny look and handed a stack of papers. There was this new internal publication, and the boss didn't have the time to do it. He dumped it in my lap, and I took it as a chance to not only cure my boredom but to also show them what I could do. I was an English major and IT major both in college, and worked in school publications. Nobody knew it, and did I show them what I could do! I did such a good job that our district office called and I got promoted there to focus solely on communications and publications/advertising. i also got a nice raise out of it too. And I do not miss being the youngest, because I finally got the respect I deserved along with my promotion.

Yours is a good example of how hard work can take you far. All you did was simply ask for something to do to keep yourself busy at work and many great things came out of it. You were able to show off skills that you had to your advantage. Sometimes just doing good work and working hard are the easiest, simplest way to get a promotion rather than brown-nosing or causing trouble.
