Responsibilities included: felling timber trees by applying knowledge of tree characteristics and cutting techniques to control direction of fall and minimize tree damage, appraising tree for characteristics, such as twists, rot, and heavy limb growth, and gauging amount and direction of lean, using ax as plumb bob, determining position, direction, and depth of cuts made and placement of wedges or jacks, clearing brush and debris from work area and escape route, and cutting saplings and other trees from falling path, using an ax or a chain saw. Other duties implied scoring cutting lines with ax, sawing undercut along scored lines with chain saw, and knocking slabs from cuts with ax as well as sawing back-cuts, leaving sufficient sound wood to control direction of fall, inserting jack or driving wedges behind saw to prevent binding of saw and start tree falling. Also stopping saw engine as tree tips, pulling cutting bar from cut, and running to predetermined location in order to avoid injury from falling limbs and flying debris.   Faller/Logger,

Responsibilities included: measuring felled trees and cutting them into specified log lengths, using axes or chain saws, placing supporting limbs or poles under felled trees in order to avoid splitting undersides, and to prevent logs from rolling, sawing back-cuts, leaving sufficient sound wood to control direction of fall, selecting trees to be cut down, assessing factors such as site, terrain, and weather conditions before beginning work. Other duties included splitting logs, using axes, wedges, and mauls, and stacking wood in racks or cord lots, stopping saw engines, pulling cutting bars from cuts, and running to safety as tree falls, trimming off the tops and limbs of trees, using chainsaws or axes, assembling floating logs into rafts for towing to mills, assessing logs after cutting to ensure that the quality and length are correct and loading them onto trucks, trailers, or railroad cars, by hand or using loaders or winches. Also maintained and repaired chainsaws and other equipment, cleaning, oiling, and greasing it, and sharpening it properly, marked logs for identification, and secured steel cables and chains to logs for dragging by tractors or for pulling by cable yarning systems.   References: Available upon request
