Qualification Summary: Extensive experience in technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory test and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematological, DNA analysis and blood banking), and preparing reports of findings. More than three years technical support work in a closely related field, (biological laboratory technician work). Knowledge of laboratory safety measures and basic laboratory materials (e.g. scales, beakers, volumetric glassware, etc.). Ability to calibrate, clean, repair, and maintain laboratory equipment. Extremely able to correctly measure and prepare chemicals, enzymes, reagents, and buffers utilized in evidence and DNA analysis. Extensive knowledge of the chain of custody of evidence reference latent prints, trace evidence, DNA profiling and DNA Casework. Able to perform job-related travel (e.g., relaying evidence, appearing in court, observing crime scene investigations, collecting DNA samples, and attending training seminars, meetings, etc.).

Responsibilities included: cleaning, repairing, and monitoring laboratory equipment, contacting manufacturer to obtain assistance in repairing equipment; observing and assisting in the calibration and maintenance of selected laboratory equipment; performing quality control checks and readings on laboratory equipment and storage facilities. Ordered, stocked, prepared, stored, and properly disposed of chemicals, enzymes, reagents, gels, buffers, and supplied necessary to perform laboratory tests; maintained a supply inventory and reordered as needed. Incorporated proper safety precautions at all times (e.g., wearing laboratory coat, gloves, goggles, mask, etc.) when handling and processing evidence or DNA profiling samples. Maintained the integrity of evidence and DNA Profiling samples by following appropriate chain of custody procedures (e.g., locating, sealing or unsealing, initialing, dating, labeling, and retrieving or returning to proper storage area). Administered preliminary tests on biological samples (e.g., blood, saliva, secretions); developed latent prints; collected and preserved trace evidence (e.g., hair, fibers, paint, glass, etc.) and prepared biological samples for DNA analysis utilizing proper chemicals, supplies and equipment (e.g., tubes, forceps, scissors).

Responsibilities included: preparing evidence, equipment, and supplies to be utilized by the laboratory evidence technician and criminalist, deferring to criminalist in areas of uncertainty, following standard operating procedure in retrieving, collecting, examining, and storing evidence and DNA profiling samples. Contacted police agencies and prosecuting attorneys' offices reference cases; documented communications and advised appropriate criminalist. Adhered to the proper procedures for accepting and returning evidence to maintain chain of custody. Collected and received DNA samples from convicted offenders and sexually violent predators for the DNA Profiling system per statutory requirements; took fingerprints and recorded identifying information. Assisted with the training of Department of Correction?s and law enforcement agency?s personnel regarding the collection, preservation and tracking of DNA profiling samples. Observed other laboratory personnel or criminalists conducting crime scene investigations. Performed job-related travel in-state and out-of-state to assist in crime scene investigations, attended training seminars, collected DNA samples, and appeared in court, as needed.
