Surviving Office politics

  • Use the grapevine wisely. Learn from it, but be very careful what you feed it. Things have a way of coming around.
  • Keep personal feelings separate from professional relationships. A good worker knows to be professional about work.
  • Abstain from passing judgments on anybody. You never know, in the same circumstances, how you would react.
  • Do not underestimate anybody. Remember, when time comes even a mouse can help the lion.
  • Be careful and very sparing with your criticism. Be lavish with appreciation and encouragement, though. People are hungry for praise; they will stretch beyond their best capacities in its anticipation.
  • Keep the lunch time gossip free. It promotes a trusting and pleasant atmosphere.
  • Do not compare your remuneration with that of others, neither allow other to do it. If you think you deserve more, prove your point to your authorities and ask for a raise. This should be based on merit, not on comparisons of pay or perks.
  • Accept that people will always have favorites, as this is human nature. Look at yourself; even you will have someone whom you are partial to. Do not let this dampen your enthusiasm for work.
  • Support your boss and obey rules. Though hierarchical office functioning is on its way out, submit to it, if your office subscribes to it. Your professionalism will change it in the long run.
  • Promote a healthy relationship with your subalterns and learn to delegate efficiently. The best results are obtained not when you do all the work, but when you delegate wisely and responsibly.
