Teaching Overseas

Teaching abroad is a good way to broaden your horizons while seeing the world, making friends and doing humanitarian work. Experienced teachers find that teaching abroad increases confidence and enhances commitment. Teaching overseas while still in university is a good way to judge the international environment and is a good start to international careers.

The True Picture
Teaching in unfamiliar environments necessitates that you be confident of your work, as difficulties will get magnified. You should not use teaching abroad as a means to run away from your problems. If you are having problems at work or at home, then moving to another country will not solve the problem, but instead make them worse. Getting rich while teaching abroad is more myth than reality, as travel costs, sightseeing, housing, gas and food are expensive and will use up your earnings. If making money is your sole purpose of teaching abroad, you will need to do some serious budgeting.

Characteristics of Teachers overseas
Successful teachers overseas are courageous and enthusiastic. You must also understand the realities of life overseas and the loneliness that can affect your work. International teachers must be observant about human and cultural relations as understanding the multi-cultural environment will be essential in relating to students.

Types of Teaching Jobs
There is a great demand for educators abroad for primary and secondary education. Anyone with a university degree can find a job overseas teaching English. Advanced degrees are required for administrative, library and counseling jobs.

Most teaching jobs are on a contract basis for two to three years at a time, while language schools have contracts of one year or even less. There is often a preference for singles and couples without children or other dependents to ease adapting to a new culture.

  • Volunteering in a Developing Country NGO's often recruit volunteers to teach in developing countries in two to three year contracts. While some organizations accept volunteers only with teacher training and some experience, others require university degrees. These positions are in the local schools where facilities are very basic.
  • Teaching at International Schools These schools are for the children of diplomats, missionaries, military personnel and businesspeople. Contracts for these schools last from two to three years. These schools are based in large cities where housing facilities will be good and there will be a large community of expatriates.
  • Private Schools There are several independent boarding schools catering to English speaking students, founded by expatriates, religious organizations or special interest groups.
  • Private Tutors If you have specialized knowledge of a subject, you can network within the expatriate community and give private lessons.
  • University Positions in Developing Countries These positions will requite a master's degree and can often be found in the newspapers.
