Breaking the Unemployment Barrier

You have searched through the Job Office, the newspapers, and hit just about every place in town and still there is no sign of a possible job opening, now what?

Making Your Own Job

Overcoming the barrier of unemployment can seem near impossible in situations like this. It seems as if you have tried everything to break through; but what about going in a different direction? If the job isn't out there, if you can't find the need in a prospective employer, then why not create a niche in the market for yourself and become self employed? When you make your own job you can:

  • Pick who you would work for
  • Work in a field you find satisfying
  • Set your own pay schedule and rate

But take note, there are details to this way out of unemployment such as taxes, promotion, and accounting that must be addressed. There is also the issue of self management. If you are ready and willing to try this route, what comes next?

Create a Need

If you can find a need in the market to fill, you could sell yourself to prospective employers as an independent contractor or temporary fill-in. If your skills allow, you can also promote yourself as a consultant to help solve specific problems. If you sell yourself well enough, you may find a prospective employer who will hand you a consistent flow of work and possibly referrals to other employers.

The Economics of Creating a Job

With the financial wizards and politicians always informing us how we are going into, or coming out of, a recession, you may wonder if there is anyone out there willing to buy what you have to offer. Yes, you can be affected by outside circumstances, but you choose to either ride along with the ups and downs of others or you can make your own fortune and circumstances. If you believe that there is no work available then you fall into a self-fulfilling prophecy and do not find work. Overcoming the barrier of unemployment takes only one job or one offer of work. There is always a need and your job is to fill it. If you are a conscientious employed person, there is never a lack of work. Negativity empties hopes and draws people down. Overcoming the barrier means positive measures must be taken. Positive thoughts bring positive actions, which end with positive results.

There is always a way to make something positive out of anything. Using available resources, common sense, and the will to be successful at what you do will only lead to better situations. Overcoming the barrier of unemployment is possible with enough planning, patience and belief that better situations do exist and can be found.
