There is always something needed, and there is always something wanted. The choice between what is needed and what is wanted while unemployed with little or no money can be frustrating.

Penny Pinching Stress

Everyone knows that when you are unemployed, finances need pared down. This is because of the obvious fact that, while being unemployed, little money is available. There is a danger in cutting too close to the bone. Pinching every penny to a point of misery can cause psychological and physical issues:

  • Depression - it has been proven that clinical depression can be triggered by severe situations and has been known to cause physical problems.
  • Sleeplessness - lack of sleep causes lack of concentration, irritability and can cause the body's internal clock to go out of sync.
  • Anxiety - this has been proven to cause high blood pressure and to speed up physical aging.
  • Emotional problems - anger and fear over cost cutting will cause a physical reaction in how the body reacts and can cause physical problems such as migraines, lower tolerance to infections and nervousness.

Comfort for Less

Being unemployed with little money doesn't mean you must give up all comfort. Finding ways to get things you want is possible while unemployed. Finances can still be maintained while keeping some level of comfort. Knowing what level of comfort you can handle is the base requirement to surviving the dry spell in your income stream. Some tips to help with this are listed below:

  • Cut down to a cheaper cable package or check into movie rental packages at the local video outlet.
  • Stop internet service for a month or two. Libraries always have entertainment available; most have access to public computers and email service.
  • Switch from credit cards to debit cards to track spending and cut down on interest charges.
  • Switch to having pizza nights at home or similar idea once every few days instead of eating at local restaurants.
  • Figure out how to make the food you love to eat and have more fun with creating it at home.
  • Switch to a basic phone service or cheap phone plan. Get a pre-paid cell phone or calling card.
  • Generic or store brands are most likely made by the same people who make your favorite food from the grocers.
  • Fashionable clothing can be found at thrift stores and discount outlets.
  • Find flea markets or garage sales when you want items such as car accessories or furniture items.
  • Gardening is always a good idea. Shop local farm markets to find other fresh foods.

To make the most out of being unemployed, finances must be rearranged, not cut apart. When you are unemployed money is simply needs to be more effectively used. Having what you want is still possible as long as you make it cost less.
