Your Family And Unemployment

Most people identify their jobs with how they feel about themselves and how important they are in life. Losing a job can mean losing a sense of self and worth, and in turn that can affect one's whole life. One may tend to think they are unimportant, and that their family will think poorly of them because of this loss. One of the most vital components in recovering from job loss is strong family support and open communication. There is a way to deal with being unemployed and communicating with your family about the situation.

The first thing to do is deal with your feelings on your own, first and foremost. Recognise that you have just suffered a significant loss, and are entitled to feel angry, confused, sad, or otherwise. Once you have truly dealt with your own feelings concerning the matter, you will be able to communicate better with your family, help them understand what is happening, and all be able to communicate together and find a solution without chaos.

After dealing with your individual feelings and coming to terms with the situation at hand, the the next step is to discuss the matter with your mate. They can help you keep your spirits up, keep motivated, and if you have children you can decide how to tell them in an honest manner that they will understand.

Children do need to be included in what is going on, and it is best to explain the situation in a way relevant to their age that they will understand. If they seem scared or concerned, reassure them that unemployment is not forever and that the changes ahead will work out for the better. Include them in any budgeting or responsibilities that may now be required to keep the household functioning. Children are more observant than most adults give them credit for, and if they know what is truly going on they will be a source of strength. Know that children do learn from what they observe, and react to the environment they are in. If you can maintain a positive vibe, they can help keep everyone else going during a job loss transition.
