Unemployment Life Transitions

Losing a job can be one of the most chaotic life experiences, literally throwing someone into turmoil and turning their life upside down. It can feel like you have been put through a blender, like someone has scrambled you. Where does one start at to pick up the pieces, make life normal again, and what about finding a new job? It is normal for someone who has lost a job to feel confused, overwhelmed, stressed out, and isolated. For many, losing a job is a forced turning point in their lives, and it is a change that is impossible to be fully prepared for.

Depending on your personal views, you can make this forced change a positive or negative event in your life. Some people use the opportunity for personal growth and exploration, perhaps taking on one or several tasks they previously did not have the time for. Losing a job can be a great kick towards returning to school and getting a degree or pushing forward for additional training that they may not have considered seriously before.

One of the advantages about being terminated from a job is that what was not possible before, there are no excuses for now. Before you might not have had the time to dedicate to a job search, or to endeavor some course of personal enlightenment such as yoga. Now, there's ample time, ample opportunity, and the possibilities for change are only as limited as the mind and will allow them to be.

This is also a time to reflect on who you are and what you want to be. Essentially, losing your job also means you lose your sense of self. But the beauty of this loss is that one can reinvent themselves to be whatever they want to be. You will be going new places and meeting new people. You can shed old tendencies and reinvent yourself to be whatever you desire in front of these new people. Any previous judgment passed over you and reputation earned will not follow you unless you want it to. This could be the opportunity of a lifetime, to reinvent yourself and be the best you can be. Acting differently, dressing differently, and being around people of a different category might be an advantage. Losing a job is not necessarily the worst thing in the world; it could be the opportunity and change that has been needed for a long time, if someone takes advantage of this forced change in their life. Use it as an opportunity, not a disadvantage. The results could be more than you dreamed or hoped for.
