Paperwork

After you submit the documents they request of you to begin the unemployment claims process, you should receive some paperwork before receiving your first weekly unemployment claim. These documents should review all information you have given them thur far for accuracy and might request more information if there is something important missing. Other documents that are mailed to you might simply be updates on the status of your claim. Everything that is mailed to you is important and should be read carefully. Anything that is missed or reported incorrectly can affect how long your claim takes to be processed and how much you will receive in benefits. An exception to reporting wages involves those who have previously worked in the military. Filing for unemployment after being in the military requires a few different steps and if service in the military was not completed in full then you are automatically ineligible. Having previously received unemployment benefits in the past base year or having received worker's compensation can make filing a bit more difficult and you might have to submit additional paperwork to support your claim.

As a general rule, it is wise to retain all financial information in an organized file for at least a year. The best choice is to retain all of this information for at least three to five years, just in case something is needed that far back. There is really no way of anticipating document need, and it is easier to have it on hand than to try to obtain it in in many cases. Organization is a must also, with keeping all paystubs together, all tax papers together, and so on. Sometimes employers do not report wages properly, and this can really tie up how quickly you get your benefits if you have no way of helping the process along.

Filing on Mondays can be stressful, as everybody else is trying to file then also. Waiting until Tuesday to file should not mess up your benefits and will most likely be quicker than waiting in line on a Monday. You can alternately call or use the internet to get your paperwork started on a Monday, then go to the office the next day to finish out whatever is needed. There are restrictions on how you can file on the internet so it is not always possible to begin your unemployment claim this way.
